Pages: 196

It will be the first book ever written on presentations specifically from the perspective of non-native English speakers. It will be written in an English that readers will be able to understand easily. This is not 'simple' English as a native speaker would interpret it, but a particular way of writing with minimal redundancy in which key points are highlighted clearly. The book will cover not only the typical difficulties of all presenters (structure, gaining audience attention, graphics on slides etc), but will also focus above all on those issues that cause specific problems for the non-native.

The Columbia Guide to Standard American English

Title: The Columbia Guide to Standard American English
Author(s): Kenneth G. Wilson
Publisher: Columbia University Press
Date: 1993
Pages: 972
Size: 2.54 Mb
Format: PDF
Quality: High
Language: American English

The most reliable and entertaining guide to effective writing and speaking for Americans today, Kenneth Wilson's Columbia Guide to Standard American English belongs on the desk of everyone who uses our ever-changing language. This book will help you write and speak clearly and appropriately for a full range of purposes and audiences. Unlike most writers on English usage (who so often reflect British practices) Wilson focuses on American English. [+/-]

In addition, this guide is the first to present a systematic, comprehensive view of our language - both spoken and written - as influenced by context. It provides the answers to such troublesome questions as: should we split an infinitive? Should we say hopefully? Should we end a sentence with a preposition? May we say can instead of may? Wilson's answer most often begins "That depends on the context". Even confident writers and accomplished speakers encounter tricky questions of usage.

For example, what prepositions correctly follow the adjective different? What is the difference between bring and take? Wilson answers such questions - about word choice, meanings, pronunciations, spellings, grammatical forms and structures, and idiomatic expressions - in thousands of clear and concise entries.

The Columbia Guide to American English offers
• readily accessible advice about American English by providing an A to Z format for quick reference;
• over 6,500 lively entries, more than any other usage book;
• sensible and useful suggestions based on current language practices;
• a convenient chart of levels of speech and writing geared to context;
• both descriptive and prescriptive entries for guidance, with thousands of examples;
• guidelines for nonsexist usage.

A vigorous assessment of how, at the end of the twentieth century, our language is best written and spoken and how we can use it most effectively, The Columbia Guide to Standard American English is the ideal handbook of language etiquette - friendly, sensible, reliable, and fun to read.

Webster's Guide to Grammar and Writing

Webster's Guide to Grammar and Writing
Intermediate/Upper-intermediate | Dr. Charles Darling | 2004 | 2.28 Mb | .chm

This is a HTML Help Compiled Help File from Webster containing the most essential explanations and information for improving grammar, hence improving writing. In some parts this file is linked to Webster knowledge bases to improve the quality of being up to date. This index includes references to both the Guide to Grammar and Writing and Principles of Composition. [+/-]

It does not, however, include references to the interactive Quizzes or to the Grammar logs (posted responses to ASK GRAMMAR queries). The Frequently Asked Questions page and the Guide's Search Engine will also help you find help on grammatical issues, tips on composition, and advice on English usage.

It is divided into 15 large sections, the three largest of which are the sections concerning sentence level advice for writers, paragraph level advice for writers, and essay level advice for writers. The Sentence Level section and the Paragraph Level section are both divided into many subsections that have their own links, presumably because these two levels involve many discrete and/or concrete rules and guidelines for composition.

The Essay Level section also contains a great deal of information, but the subsections do not have links of their own, unlike the subsections of the Sentence Level and Paragraph Level sections, presumably because guidelines for essay level composition are not as discrete or concrete.

It also contains 12 other types of information, including Other Online Resources for Writing, samples of different types of writing (i.e., business letters, thank-you notes, memos, application letters) under Forms of Communication, grammar quizzes under Interactive Quizzes, quotations from famous writers under Eminent Quotables, a place for students to ask questions under Ask Grammar! and Grammar Logs, where the site keeps track of questions students have asked and the answers that were given to them.
