The Power of Persuasion: How We’re Bought and Sold

Title: The Power of Persuasion: How We’re Bought and Sold
Author(s): Robert Levine, Ph.D.
Publisher: Wiley
ISBN: 0471266345
Date: 2003
Pages: 259
Size: 1.41 Mb
Format: PDF
Quality: High
Language: American English

This valuable and nonacademic guide reveals the extent to which we are surrounded by persuasion, and how we can resist. Levine (A Geography of Time), a professor of psychology at Cal State Fresno, opens by demonstrating that all of us (including himself) can be persuaded under the right circumstances. He goes on to study financial manipulation and the use of the sense of obligation (which exists in all cultures, even if it is most strongly visible in Japan), and then proceeds to a nuts-and-bolts analysis of salesmanship by describing what he learned and did (and had done to him) as an automobile salesman. [+/-]
He offers an admirably concise and unemotional analysis of the famous Milgram experiment, involving the (claimed) administration of ever-stronger electric shocks to test the impulse to obedience. Inevitably, he moves to cults, the Moonies and the ultimate persuasion horror story, Jonestown. Not so inevitably, he avoids hysteria and demonization, even of Jim Jones, and points out that brute force is required at the extreme end of the persuasion spectrum. Levine's final chapter offers ways of dealing with unwelcome persuasion while remaining part of a society in which some persuasion is part of almost any social interaction. The final results are bout as far as possible from the shrill Hidden Persuaders tradition or the cult deprogrammers who become cult gurus themselves-and quite persuasive about the author's credentials, common sense and ethics.

Why Men Don't Listen & Women Can't Read Maps

Title: Why Men Don't Listen & Women Can't Read Maps: How we're different and what to do about it
Author(s): Barbara & Allan Pease
Publisher: HarperCollins
ISBN: 0767907639
Date: 2001
Pages: 305
Size: 2.44 Mb
Format: PDF
Quality: High
Language: British English

Ever wonder why women can brush their teeth while walking and talking on various subjects while men generally find this very difficult to do? Why 99 percent of all patents are registered by men? Why stressed women talk? Why so many husbands hate shopping? According to Barbara and Allan Pease, science now confirms that "the way our brains are wired and the hormones pulsing through our bodies are the two factors that largely dictate, long before we are born, how we will think and behave. [+/-]

Our instincts are simply our genes determining how our bodies will behave in given sets of circumstances." That's right: socialization, politics, or upbringing aside, men and women have profound brain differences and are intrinsically inclined to act in distinct--and consequently frustrating--ways.

The premises behind Why Men Don't Listen and Women Can't Read Maps is that all too often, these differences get in the way of fulfilling relationships and that understanding our basic urges can lead to greater self-awareness and improved relations between the sexes. The Peases spent three years researching their book--traveling the globe, talking to experts, and studying the cutting-edge research of ethnologists, psychologists, biologists, and neuroscientists--yet their work does not read a bit like "hard science." In fact, the authors go to considerable lengths to point out that their book is intended to be funny, interesting, and easy to read; in short, this is a book whose primary purpose is to talk about "average men and women, that is, how most men and women behave most of the time, in most situations, and for most of the past."

Why Men Don't Listen, therefore, deals largely in generalizations, and this is bound to alienate some readers. "We don't beat around the bush with suppositions or politically correct clichés," the Peases claim. Those up for an irreverent and unapologetic take on why men and women just can't help themselves sometimes may just decide to read on. --Svenja Soldovieri --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The Columbia Guide to Standard American English

Author(s): Kenneth G. Wilson
Publisher: Columbia University Press
Date: 1993
Pages: 972
Size: 2.54 Mb
Format: PDF
Quality: High
Language: American English

The most reliable and entertaining guide to effective writing and speaking for Americans today, Kenneth Wilson's Columbia Guide to Standard American English belongs on the desk of everyone who uses our ever-changing language. This book will help you write and speak clearly and appropriately for a full range of purposes and audiences. Unlike most writers on English usage (who so often reflect British practices) Wilson focuses on American English. [+/-]

In addition, this guide is the first to present a systematic, comprehensive view of our language - both spoken and written - as influenced by context. It provides the answers to such troublesome questions as: should we split an infinitive? Should we say hopefully? Should we end a sentence with a preposition? May we say can instead of may? Wilson's answer most often begins "That depends on the context". Even confident writers and accomplished speakers encounter tricky questions of usage.

For example, what prepositions correctly follow the adjective different? What is the difference between bring and take? Wilson answers such questions - about word choice, meanings, pronunciations, spellings, grammatical forms and structures, and idiomatic expressions - in thousands of clear and concise entries.

The Columbia Guide to American English offers
• readily accessible advice about American English by providing an A to Z format for quick reference;
• over 6,500 lively entries, more than any other usage book;
• sensible and useful suggestions based on current language practices;
• a convenient chart of levels of speech and writing geared to context;
• both descriptive and prescriptive entries for guidance, with thousands of examples;
• guidelines for nonsexist usage.

A vigorous assessment of how, at the end of the twentieth century, our language is best written and spoken and how we can use it most effectively, The Columbia Guide to Standard American English is the ideal handbook of language etiquette - friendly, sensible, reliable, and fun to read.
